Why Use Capture?
While the tools and user interface give a good argument for why you'd want to use capture as a user, what's the advantage to the ARDI administrator or data analyst?
Fast Development
Many of the computations that the Capture addon performs can be time-consuming to build if you're making your own custom analytics. What might take an analyst several hours to write the logic for can be performed in just a few minutes using Capture - and all of the data storage, scheduled recording and API access is automatically taken care of.
Quick Rebuilding
One of the primary reasons to use Capture is how easy it makes it when you have to make changes to what you capture.
In many cases, you'll start building a Capture with the intention of recording some very specific pieces of information. But over time - between your own analytic work and feedback from users - you're very likely to want to introduce more detail, sensors, filters, sanity-checks and information to your database.
With Capture, it's very easy to back-generate large amounts of information, re-creating your database with new logic and refined results. This process may take time, but it's fully automated and doesn't need any effort or attention.
Common Logic
Every process is unique, and sometimes so is the logic behind it. Exactly what 'running time' or OEE means can change from business-to-business and even site-to-site.
Capturing your KPIs and other measurements means that you have a single, consistent source of that information that you can freely use in other locations, such as daily, weekly or monthly reporting, Excel spreadsheets, web dashboards and analytics.
If the logic behind your KPIs evolve, you then only need to update the logic in one place rather than having to update many different solutions.
Data Storage/Caching
Some of the information you Capture isn't simple to calculate - particularly when you're summarising high-resolution data.
If you have 1-second data, calculating monthly figures can require millions of data points, which takes a significant amount of time to process.
By creating hourly/daily/weekly/monthly summaries with Capture, you have access to pre-recorded values that can be queried almost instantly. This makes monthly reporting take seconds instead of minutes and reduces the stress on your systems.
